Bank Strike on September 28, 29 and 30, 2026: Full Details

New Delhi, September 25, 2026: Bank customers across India are facing an important banking update as the bank strike on September 28, 29 and 30, 2026 has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). The three-day nationwide strike is centered on the demand for implementation of a five-day banking week.

Why are bank employees going on strike?

The major unresolved demand behind the proposed strike is the implementation of Five-Day Banking. According to the Ministry of Finance, the government has already kept the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme in abeyance, while the five-day workweek remains the principal outstanding demand.

Bank unions have been seeking a system in which all Saturdays are holidays. At present, bank branches generally remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays.

Could banks remain closed for five consecutive days?

The proposed three-day strike comes immediately after the weekend. September 26 is the second Saturday and September 27 is Sunday, followed by the strike on September 28, 29 and 30.

As a result, customers could face disruption in regular branch-based banking services for five consecutive days.

However, the government has taken a special step for customer convenience. Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks will operate normally on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The RBI has approved the operation of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on that day.

Which banking services may be affected?

The primary impact of the strike is expected on physical branch operations. Customers may face disruption in counter services, cheque-related activities and other branch-based transactions during the strike period.

Digital banking facilities such as UPI, internet banking, mobile banking and ATM services are expected to remain available, although individual service availability may depend on the concerned bank's systems and arrangements.

What should bank customers do?

Customers who have important branch-related banking work should consider completing those transactions before September 28. Major banks, including SBI, have advised customers to complete essential transactions in advance to avoid inconvenience.

Customers can also use UPI, ATMs, mobile banking and internet banking for transactions where those services are available.
