Share Market 24 September 2026: Nifty, Sensex and Bank Nifty Fall

New Delhi, September 24, 2026: Indian equity markets witnessed heavy selling pressure on Thursday, September 24. The Sensex fell 1,247.71 points or 1.67% to close at 73,580.54, while the Nifty 50 declined 383.70 points or 1.64% to finish at 23,063.10. The Bank Nifty dropped 1,110.40 points or 1.96% to close at 55,438.50.

Nifty 50 Performance

The Nifty 50 touched an intraday low of 23,046.15 before ending at 23,063.10. Only three Nifty 50 constituents closed higher on September 24: Cipla, ONGC and NTPC.

Sensex Performance

The Sensex traded between 73,563.92 and 74,362.29 during the session before settling at 73,580.54. Around 1,400 stocks advanced, while 2,772 stocks declined and 169 remained unchanged.

Bank Nifty Performance

Bank Nifty closed at 55,438.50, down 1,110.40 points or 1.96%. Banking and financial stocks were among the major drags on the benchmark indices during the session.

Among Nifty 50 stocks, HDFC Life, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finserv and Adani Enterprises were among the biggest decliners. PB Fintech, Max Financial Services, L&T Finance, Info Edge and AU Small Finance Bank were among the major Midcap 100 laggards.

Why Did the Indian Stock Market Fall?

Several factors contributed to the weak session. Rising crude oil prices and higher US Treasury yields added pressure to emerging-market equities. The market also reacted to proposed changes discussed by IRDAI concerning insurance distribution economics, which triggered significant selling in insurance and related financial stocks.

Foreign institutional investors were provisional net sellers of approximately ₹5,027.36 crore in Indian equities on September 24, while domestic institutional investors were provisional net buyers of around ₹4,301.18 crore.

Conclusion

The Indian stock market ended sharply lower on September 24, 2026. The Nifty 50 closed below 23,100, the Sensex fell more than 1,200 points and Bank Nifty declined nearly 2%. Cipla, ONGC and NTPC were among the few Nifty 50 stocks to finish higher, while insurance, banking and financial stocks faced substantial selling pressure.
