Why Are Gold Prices Moving Today?

Global gold prices were influenced by expectations around the U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary-policy decision. Reuters reported that spot gold gained around 0.8% to $4,328.39 per ounce on September 16 as traders awaited the Fed decision.

Domestic prices can differ between MCX, bullion-market benchmarks and jeweller rates. Local demand, currency movements, taxes, transportation costs and individual jeweller pricing can all affect the final price paid by consumers.

24K vs 22K vs 18K Gold

  • 24K Gold: Around 99.9% purity and commonly used for investment bars and coins.
  • 22K Gold: Around 91.6% purity and widely used for jewellery.
  • 18K Gold: Around 75% purity and commonly used for jewellery with greater alloy content.

The final jewellery bill can be higher than the quoted gold rate because of GST, making charges, wastage and other applicable charges.

Conclusion

Gold prices remained elevated on September 16, 2026, with differences across Indian markets. Delhi was quoted around ₹1.536 lakh per 10 grams for 24K gold and ₹1.408 lakh for 22K gold, while several major markets such as Mumbai and Kolkata were slightly lower.
