New Delhi, September 29, 2026: Indian stock markets ended lower on Tuesday, September 29, extending their decline for the second consecutive trading session. The Nifty 50 closed at 22,716.20, down 64.05 points or 0.28%. The BSE Sensex settled at 72,529.07, down 242.65 points or 0.33%. The Bank Nifty closed at 54,259.95, lower by 211.70 points or 0.39%.

Nifty 50 Performance

The Nifty 50 opened at 22,732.45 and touched an intraday high of 22,753.25. The index fell to an intraday low of 22,569.65 before recovering partially and closing at 22,716.20. Of the 50 Nifty constituents, 17 stocks closed higher, 32 declined and one remained unchanged.

Sensex Falls 242 Points

The BSE Sensex ended at 72,529.07, down 242.65 points or 0.33%. The index experienced significant intraday volatility and fell nearly 708 points from the previous close before recovering from the day's lows.

Bank Nifty Today

Bank Nifty declined 211.70 points or 0.39% to finish at 54,259.95. The index opened around 54,283 and touched an intraday high of approximately 54,403.

Adani Enterprises led the Nifty gainers with a 5.01% rise, followed by Adani Ports at 4.49% and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories at 2.53%.

Titan Company was the biggest Nifty 50 loser among the reported leading stocks, followed by Wipro, HCL Technologies, Apollo Hospitals and Tech Mahindra. Tata Chemicals also saw significant weakness during the session.

Sector Performance

Metal and Pharma were among the few sectors that ended higher. The Nifty Metal index gained around 0.78%, while Nifty Pharma advanced around 0.64%.

On the other hand, Consumer Durables, Realty, IT and Auto remained under pressure. Nifty IT declined around 1.48%, while Consumer Durables fell around 2.71%.

Why Did the Market Fall?

Indian equities remained under pressure amid elevated crude oil prices, higher US Treasury yields, rupee weakness and foreign fund outflows. Reuters reported that the Nifty and Sensex remained near six-month lows during the session, with considerable volatility around the monthly derivatives expiry.
