New Delhi, September 2, 2026: Indian equity markets ended lower on Wednesday as selling pressure continued across major sectors. The Nifty 50, Sensex and Nifty Bank all closed in the red as geopolitical tensions, higher crude oil prices and weak global cues weighed on investor sentiment.

Nifty 50 Today

The Nifty 50 closed at 23,914.45, down 141.35 points or 0.59% on September 2, 2026. The index opened at 23,858.00. Market breadth remained weak, with 14 Nifty 50 stocks ending higher and 36 closing lower.

Coal India emerged as the strongest Nifty 50 gainer, rising 4.05% to ₹417.85. NTPC and Adani Ports were among the other notable gainers.

Sensex Today

The BSE Sensex declined 373.93 points or 0.49% to settle at 76,570.35. Selling pressure was visible across several heavyweight stocks, particularly in auto and technology-related counters.

Bank Nifty Today

The Nifty Bank index ended at 57,172.00, down 237.60 points or 0.41%. Banking stocks remained mixed, with weakness in several major banking counters limiting the index's performance.

Nifty 50 Top Gainer and Top Loser

Among Nifty 50 stocks, Coal India was the standout gainer, closing at ₹417.85 with a 4.05% rise. Eicher Motors was the leading loser, falling 3.24% to ₹7,711.50. Wipro and Mahindra & Mahindra were also among the major decliners.

Why Did the Indian Stock Market Fall Today?

The main pressure came from renewed geopolitical tensions in West Asia and rising crude oil prices. Brent crude moved towards the mid-$90s per barrel, raising concerns about inflation, the rupee and India's import bill.

The auto sector remained particularly weak, while stocks such as Adani Ports, Power Grid and NTPC provided some support to the broader market.
