Why Did the Stock Market Fall Today?

The main trigger was the RBI's 25-basis-point repo-rate hike to 5.50%, the first such increase since February 2023. The RBI also changed its stance to calibrated tightening, signalling a greater focus on inflation risks.

High crude oil prices, global financial conditions and a weaker rupee also weighed on investor sentiment. Brent crude was around $101.79 a barrel, while the Indian rupee closed at approximately ₹96.42 per US dollar.

Interestingly, banking stocks performed relatively better after the RBI announcement. Kotak Mahindra Bank, PNB and other lenders gained as investors assessed the possible impact of higher lending rates on bank margins.

Conclusion

The Indian stock market ended lower on 7 October 2026. Nifty 50 closed at 22,603.05, Sensex at 72,638.70, while Bank Nifty ended at 55,055.55. Bank of Maharashtra was the biggest gainer among the tracked F&O stocks, while National Aluminium Company recorded the sharpest decline.
